Model Description:
This set is of the New Haven's famous Merchants Limited, from around the mid-1950s.
The EP5 "Jet" was made famous by several Lionel and American Flyer
Model Train Sets in the 50s and 60s. The Pullmans were famous in their own
right, and we have put these pieces together so you can enjoy this recreation.
Featuring the now-famous Train Artisan Pullman set with full interiors and
a multimedia-enriched passenger view, custom Merchants Limited skins, custom
cab and new sounds, this train will make a fine addition to any Northeast
rail enthusiast's MSTS collection. But you certainly don't have to be from
the Northeast.
This package requires the original EP5 to be installed.
History
The flagship of the New Haven fleet, the Boston-New
York Merchants Limited was inaugurated in December of 1903. This train was
created in response to the need for a train to Manhattan from Boston after
5 p.m. for business travelers. Pullman cars entered the scene in 1920, and
Sunday service was started in 1924. Meals on the Merchants Limited were legendary;
by 1949 regular coaches were added, and the Merchants Limited ran under the
New Haven flag until their acquisition by Penn Central in 1969.
The EP5 -- a 4000 h.p.
brute optimized for the Electrified Zone between New York and New Haven. It
was very good at handling long passenger trains on the twisting Shore Line
where getting into and out of the many close together stations fast was more
important than raw top speed in maintaining a schedule. This Motor was capable
of running under both 25hz AC Overhead Wire and the DC third rail leading
into New York's Grand Central Terminal.
