History:
VIA Rail ordered these General Electric-built 4200hp locomotives
to replace the aging VIA F40s, as well as the Montreal Locomotive Works (Alco)
LRC power cars. Initially designated by GE as model AMD-103 ( AMtrak Diesel
- 103mph ) they were called the Genesis series as they featured many improvements
over the previous standard passenger locomotive practice. They are commonly
referred to as the P42. Mechanically based on the very popular Dash 9 freight
locomotives (also available from NALW), these units feature GE's time-tested
7FDL-16 prime mover, microprocessor-controlled head end power, and electronic
fuel injection.
